Smart Snacks in Schools

The Smart Snacks in Schools Rule, also known as the Competetive Foods Rule, requires that all snacks and beverages SOLD to students during the school day adhere to federal and state nutrition standards. The snacks and beverages sold to students by HBCSD Food Services comply with or exceed these standards.

This rule doesn’t just apply to Food Services- it applies to all groups (PTA, student groups) and individuals that sell food or beverages to student during the school day.

A school day is defined as the period from 12:01 AM until 30 minutes after the end of the instructional day.

All snacks and beverages sold to students must meet specific nutrition standards. “Sold” includes the exchange of food for money, coupons, vouchers, or order forms, when any part of the exchange occurs on campus.

Food fundraisers occurring on a school campus during the school day must also meet nutrition standards and follow specific serving rules.
